Xiaomi presented, on Friday (5), a new cooling technology for mobile phones. The LiquidCool Technology Loop promises to reduce the temperature of smartphones more efficiently and with twice the capacity of the solutions currently on the market. The novelty is expected to start appearing in Chinese-branded products in the second half of 2022.
The solution is an advance to the cooling methods currently used in smartphones. In a test with a modified Xiaomi Mix 4, the device kept temperatures below 47.7ºC while the processor was 8.6ºC lower than the standard version of the phone. The experiment was conducted by running Genshin Impact for 30 minutes with settings at most and at 60 frames per second (qps).
The manufacturer explains that the maximum system capacity is increased by up to 100% by allowing for a smoother heat exchange flow. Another advantage focuses on design, as the new solution can be implemented on any mobile phone. In addition, the technology ensures more space to include other components in smartphones.
This whole process works in chains to ensure the promised improvements. The solution brings an evaporator, a condenser, a refill chamber, as well as gas and liquid pipes. All these items are connected to maintain a cycle capable of transferring heat from the evaporator to the refill chamber in a single direction.
The technology still takes advantage of the same method of cooling by steam chambers. But the new LiquidCool Loop solution uses a capillary effect to make the heat exchange by fluids through pipes that are connected between the components mentioned above. Thus, the temperature of the cell can be controlled more efficiently.
The system works a looping. The process starts in the evaporator, which is placed on sources that generate heat, such as a processor. The part is responsible for turning the liquid into gas so that it is carried through a tube to the condenser. The gas will then return to the liquid state and be transported again by another heat pipe to the recharging chamber.
Already with the temperature reduced, these liquids will be absorbed by the refill chamber through small fibers. In this case, the chamber is responsible for refilling the evaporator so that the entire cycle is started again. In other words: the agent that went from liquid to gaseous state and then returned to the liquid state will return to the evaporator for this whole process to be repeated.
Xiaomi even implemented a Tesla valve between the recharging chamber and the evaporator. It is a one-way valve that prevents evaporator gases from being brought into the chamber. Thus, only liquids with lower temperature will be taken to the evaporator to complete the process.
