Samsung launches small 50 MP sensor for mobile phones with more cameras

Samsung unveiled, on Thursday (10), the Isocell JN1. The photo sensor has a resolution of 50 megapixels and pixels of 0.64 micrometers (μm). The component is 1/2.76 inch long and can be applied to both the back of the phone and the front camera for selfies. It is not yet known which will be the first smartphone with the piece.

The component has resolution of 50 megapixels, but can take photos of 12.5 megapixels with the pixel binning technique. The practice is known to add four 0.64 μm pixels to create a 1.28 μm. The feature is useful for photos with more detail and clearer, if the lighting of the environment is not very good, for example.

The Isocell JN1 is 1/2.76 inch. According to Samsung, this measure makes the launch compatible with existing 1/2.8 inch products. In addition, the component can be intended for front cameras, for higher quality selfies, and for other sets that use ultrawide and telephoto lenses, for example.

“The smaller sensor can also reduce the camera module height by about 10%, minimizing camera bulge for thinner, simplified designs on next-generation smartphones,” they said.

Samsung Isocell JN1 records videos in 4K at 60 fps
The release features Isocell 2.0. The manufacturer says the technology increases light sensitivity by 16%. Smart-ISO is also present. The mechanism lowers the ISO when there is plenty of lighting in the scenario, to retain the details of the images, or increases the ISO when it detects that there is little light in the environment.

Double Super PD provides more agility to autofocus. Samsung says the feature uses twice the pixel density used for phase detection than the predecessor Super PD. The increase promises “the same autofocus performance even in environments with lighting levels about 60% lower”.

The new photo sensor can still record videos in 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second (fps). In Full HD, the amount of frames rises to 240 fps.

The Samsung Isocell JN1 is already in mass production. But so far, there is no forecast of launching a mobile phone with the new sensor of the South Korean brand.
