Microsoft is ready to make life easier for millions of users. The company is reportedly preparing to offer, in a future update, a feature that allows you to access files stored on an Android smartphone directly using Windows File Explorer. This is good news since, at the moment, accessing a smartphone’s content in Windows requires you to activate a specific option in the device’s settings once connected via USB to your PC.
As is often the case, this new possibility was brought to light by PhantomOcean3, a hacker renowned for dissecting pre-versions of Windows and Microsoft applications to discover new features coming soon. The leaker shared a screenshot on his Twitter/X account showing a new option in this direction within the new mobile device management module. The description of this seems to leave no room for doubt since it proposes to “Show mobile device in File Explorer”.
This feature has been hidden by Microsoft and is not yet available by default. Once enabled, this option automatically triggers a permission request dialog to allow (or not) Windows to access your smartphone’s content.
We actually don’t know the date. Since the option is still at a very early stage of development, we will undoubtedly have to wait a few more months before we see it rolled out in Windows 11. And that’s all the more true if Microsoft plans to test it with its Insiders beforehand.
