WhatsApp groups have become a way to organize anything involving three or more people: work meetings, birthday parties, soccer with friends, and more. The app is testing a feature that should help with this. Soon, it will be possible to create events within groups.
The novelty is present in version 2.23.21.12 of WhatsApp Beta for Android and was discovered by the specialized website WABetaInfo.
On the screens shared by the publication, it is possible to create an event with a name, description, date, time, and location. There’s also the option to add a video call — useful if it’s a remote meeting, for example.
After creating the event, the user can send an invitation to the group chat. The idea, apparently, is that everyone has access to appointment details, without having to resort to external calendars and email invitations, or having to keep sending messages in the chat with each change of plans.
As WABetaInfo notes, the events feature appears to be only available to Communities in this beta. Communities work in a similar way to Discord servers, where not everyone who is part of the community is in every channel or group conversation.
It makes sense for events to be tested there first: with a lot of people, it can be difficult to organize an appointment for everyone.
Meta wants WhatsApp for everything
Meta has been working to make WhatsApp a more complete messenger.
In recent months, the app has gained advanced features, such as screen sharing and video calls for up to eight people. Before, things like this were exclusive to more professional-oriented tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to name a few.
Other functions of competing messengers are on the way, such as voice chats, which already exist on Discord, and usernames, as on Telegram.
