Spotify has announced that its app will have music videos, which can be accessed with a tap inside the player. The novelty is still in beta, but will be released in 11 countries, For now, only selected videos will be available. The feature is exclusive to users who subscribe to the Premium package.
According to the explanatory video released by the company, the smartphone app will have, inside the music player, a button to switch to video. When you tap on it, the clip starts playing, and when you place the device horizontally, the images fill the entire screen. The same button is used to switch to audio and go back to playing only the sound.
The streaming platform will initially make available a limited catalog of music videos — the press release mentions the internationals Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Ice Spice, The platform already uses videos in other ways: podcasts can put images of the recordings of the episodes, for example.
Spotify puts clips in other countries
Initially, only 11 countries will have access to the feature: music videos are being released in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya. They are available for the Android, iOS, desktop, and TV apps.
On Reddit, around December 2023, some users in the United States shared that videos have emerged as an option in the smartphone and computer apps. Even so, today’s statement does not include the U.S. on the list.
Spotify isn’t the first streaming service to add the clips to its content. Apple Music and Tidal, for example, have relied on the videos on their platforms for a long time. YouTube Music, on the other hand, has integration with YouTube, the main channel for music videos today.
