Sony announced on Tuesday (10) a new version of the PlayStation 5, this time smaller and more portable than the console released in 2020. The PS5 Slim hits stores in November and has a suggested retail price of $499 for the disc drive version and $449 for the so-called digital edition.
The new edition of the PS5 had already been speculated by leakers for months. Confirmation finally came, but the Japanese giant did not want to adopt the name PS5 Slim. We’re going to use the term to differentiate it from the original model. The manufacturer did not give a date, but the expectation is that the product will appear in stores before Black Friday, scheduled for November 24.
New PS5 Slim is up to 24% lighter than PS5 Fat
In the official announcement, Sony claims that the version of the new PlayStation 5 without a physical media player (called the digital edition) is 24% lighter than the digital PS5 released from 2022, when the manufacturer released updated models of the consoles.
The PlayStation 5 Slim with a physical media player is 18% lighter than the 2022 predecessor model. As expected, the reader’s part maintains a sharp break in the PS5’s visuals (which some may find ugly). There is no way to reduce it here: the disks are still the same size.
The specs are also the same. Sony’s console retains the RDNA 2 architecture in its GPU and the eight-core 8 Zen 2 CPU (both from AMD). GDDR6 RAM follows at 16 GB.
It is not known when the PS5 Slim will be launched or the price in Brazil. The official material only states that the release outside the United States will be “in the coming months”. With today’s announcement, the PS5 Slim becomes the standard console model. The large PlayStation 5 will be sold as usual until stocks run out.
And those who purchase the digital PS5 Slim can buy a separate physical reader with a suggested price of US$ 79,99.
In early 2024, Sony will release red, black, blue, and silver cases for the PS5 Slim. Before that, those who want to buy the vertical stand will have to do it separately — the accessory will not be sold in the console’s box.
The term Slim was coined back in 2004, when Sony released the nostalgic PlayStation 2 in an updated and reduced version. The first edition of the console became known as the PS2 Fat. The new PS5 has a “30% smaller volume”.
