Apple considered using DuckDuckGo as the default in Safari’s private mode

The U.S. lawsuit against Google for alleged monopoly continues to reveal behind the scenes of the market. Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of DuckDuckGo, said Apple had been interested in using its search engine as the default in Safari’s private mode, but its contract with Google wouldn’t let it. John Giannandrea, an Apple executive, tells a slightly different story.

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that promises greater protection for users’ privacy. He says he doesn’t create profiles based on searches, for example — something Google does to target ads. Weinberg was one of the witnesses in the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Google.

Apple met with Microsoft in 2018 and 2020 to discuss a purchase of Bing or a joint venture between the two companies.

Studies have shown, however, that Bing performed worse than Google, except for desktop searches in English. Satya Nadella himself must agree.

Another explanation that emerged was that these talks were a way to put pressure on Google and get a more advantageous contract. Microsoft itself knew this.

“It’s no secret that Apple makes more money for Bing to exist than Bing itself does,” said Mikhail Parakhin, Microsoft’s head of advertising and web services.
