It is for this reason that Microsoft has exited with Surface Duo 2.
Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is in its sunset age perhaps with this latest software update it’s receiving. Soon after, Windows Central remarked that the tech giant has released a security update for the device months before the end-of-support date, which is October 21.
A reduction of time to a third of the normal preparatory time
The Surface Duo 2 was announced in October 2021 and at the time Microsoft promised to support this dual-screen hardware with software updates for three years. Since then, only one platform update has been released, which promoted the device to Android 12L. In contrast, Surface Duo users have been more fortunate as their device transitioned from Android 10, then to Android 11 and now to Android 12L. It should, however, be pointed out that the latest edition of google’s mobile operating system is Android 15.
A disappointing performance
Compared to today’s laptops and ultrabooks, the Duo 2 has a really weak performance. Many Android original equipment manufacturers, with Google and Samsung leading the pack, pledge as many as seven generations of the platform updates. This should also be recalled to have come with the Surface Duo 2 which was released at $1500. Most of all, it is regrettable, because the weak link of all the Duo series has always been precisely the software. Aside from offering more compelling hardware in the Duo, Cherlynn Low, the Engadget deputy editor, indicated in her 2021 review of the device that the Duo continues to have a problem of a rather uneven user experience.
A shift in strategy for Microsoft
This situation is not shocking if we analyze Microsoft’s development in the past few months. The more the company has embraced the use of AI the more the Surface series appears to be out of relevance. However, based on information presented by Business Inside last year, Panos Panay decided to leave Microsoft because some of the most progressive projects in the unit had been canceled.
